  • Confusion about Marriage certificate - New OCI - US Citizen by Naturalization

    Hi All,

I'm applying for a New OCI as an Indian origin applicant and a US citizen by Naturalization. I'm confused as to what to do about the marriage certificate.

The OCIsevices dot gov dot in website says that a marriage certificate is not required. It is only applicable for Spouse based OCI applications - which does NOT apply to me.

My spouse is not a person of Indian origin. I'm only applying for my own OCI card on the basis on my own prior Indian citizenship. So I have NOT uploaded the marriage certificate on the OCI services gov website. I have filled out the OCI gov application truthfully and have given information on my foreign spouse and her nationality etc.

However, the New OCI checklist mentions that I must send a marriage certificate. So I'm confused what I should do? Should I send a paper copy of the marriage certificate to VFS. The applicable Indian consulate for me is in Houston, Texas.

I would also prefer that the OCI card does not have my spouse's name on there.

Also, on the checklist it is mentioned that I don't have to send my original US passport, which I want to confirm is actually the case? So my original US passport will no longer be required?

Would appreciate if someone can answer my questions and share their experience.

    Thanks in advance!

Update: I called the VFS hotline and the customer rep was not very confident in his answer. First he insisted that I should have uploaded the marriage certificate on the OCI services gov website. Then when I again explained to him that my spouse is a foreign citizen with no connection to India and I'm the one who is a person of Indian origin and the basis of my application is my own prior Indian citizenship. He then said still send the marriage certificate to VFS.

So finally, I ended up sending it to VFS. Will keep the forum updated on this.
