I saw only a few recent posts on passport renewal timeline for Indian Embassy @ DC. I recently got my passport renewed from DC and thought of putting some info out there. Here are my stats / process times
Original Passport expiring: 23 Oct 2011
Docs Mailed: Oct 25 2010
Docs reached embassy: Oct 26 2010 @ 10.00 AM
Package Initiated (NOT MAILED): Nov 11 2010 (from UPS website)
Money Order cashed (by embassy): Nov 15 2010
Passport Mailed (by embassy): Dec 2 2010
Passport Received (via UPS NEXT DAY AIR): Dec 3 2010
My knowledge is the embassy initiates a package when they start working on your case which is Nov 11 in my case. From the above dates it looks like there is a 2 week delay before they open your file which is Ok. After the start of processing started it took 2.5 weeks for the issue of passport (based on the issue date in mine). The documents you need to send are all clearly listed on the website. After you print out the online forms, in the space to affix photos it is mentioned 2"*2" photos which is what I sent.
During the gestation period
, I inquired a few of my acquaintances on how long it took for them. For three of them it took 1 - 1.5 months and so did mine. For one it took 2 months. That should give an idea.
If you sent a money order for payment and are still waiting on your passport, try tracking it. The receipt should have a 1 800 number. That should give you an idea.
