Still confused about self-attestation vs affidavit in lieu of originals?

I am applying to my OCI card as an adult (US citizen by birth). Is the affidavit in lieu of originals required if I just self-attest to everything? I am confused why both would be needed, and I would prefer to avoid the extra step of the affidavit. What are peoples' experiences with this?

Yes, you have to self-attest each copy of supporting material, and, also include the signed/notarized affidavit.
