  • Original US Passport for OCI application applied at San Francisco Consulate

I'm about to apply for an OCI at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco & noticed that the consulate requires me to send the original US passport, which they will keep till my application is processed. What exactly is the reason behind it? Also, why does this rule only apply to the Indian Consulate in San Francisco?

That is how they want to do it, and you don't have any alternative.

I had the same question. I've also written to the consulate and have received no reply. I've heard from a friend that they will start your application and will notify you when your approval has arrived. You then have to send your US passport. However that's not what the application website says.

It seems that they don't want you to travel internationally when the OCI is being processed. But it looks like that is not a generic rule as other Indian consulates do not have this requirement.
