  • Lost Indian Passport - Need to apply for OCI

Me and my wife obtained US citizenship in 2007. We applied for indian visa immediately and sent our Indian passports
for cancellation. When we received the passports, only mine had the cancelled seal and my wife's did not. Since I was
in a hurry to leave for India, I did not take that very seriously.

We recently moved to a new location and we noticed that we somehow misplaced our indian passports and it is lost. We do have
    photo copies of them though.

Now, we both are applying for OCI. Here is the situation.

    1. My indian passport copies show that my passport was cancelled. So i really need not do anything as far as OCI is concerned. But the
issue is, since I don't have the original, I cannot obtain a notarized copy of the same (my jurisdiction is DC). Also would they require
to see my original passport during the OCI stamping?

    2. My wife's passport does not contain the cancelled seal, so there is no proof that she renounced her indian citizenship. Since she does not
have the original passpor, my understanding is she cannot get a surreder ceritificate. So what are her options?

Should we both file police complaints that our passports are lost and use, copies of our indian passport and notatized copies of educational certificate
    etc for OCI application?

Has anyone had the experience of applying for OCI with documents other than old indian passport?

Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

if you have the copy of Indian passport, you will have least problem. apply for Renunciation for lost of Indian passport with copy for proof of Indian origin.

I acquired citizenship in the 1990s. At the time of naturalization, the US government instructed us to surrender/destroy Indian passport.

Check if you are understanding their requirements correctly. I don't see how the CKGS office can require you to submit the original passport, or notarize with the original passport, when it is required to surrender passport upon acquisition of new citizenship. Tell them it was surrendered.

Here is link to example of surrender form:
