  • surrender certificate/renunciation of Indian passport - pl. help

    Hi All,

I have applied for OCI along with renunciation. I have not violated any rules, submittted all forms and fees, but still Travisa is demanding the $250 fine and put my applicaiton on hold because I didn't surrender my passport within 3 years. But my passport reached their office before the 3 year limit.

    The details are as follows:

Date of Naturalization: March 19, 2008
Date Indian passport received at Travisa: March 16, 2011. ( 3 days before 3 year limit )
Passport NOT used for travel after March 19, 2008.

I have appealed to them and also written to CGI-SFO. So far no response. Anybody had similar experiences ? I appreciate any of your suggestions/ideas regarding dealing with this.

    Thanks,
    uma129

That is a very peculiar case. Someone is very unlikely to have the exact same experience.

surrender certificate/renunciation of Indian passport - pl. help

Hi, Hope you had luck with SFO-Embassy instead of Travisa ?

The publicity which was done last year by Indian Embassies about new rules on renunciation said :
        ***
        guidelines are as follows:

        (i) For those who acquired foreign citizenship on or before 31 May, 2010 and had got their Indian passports cancelled on acquisition of foreign citizenship, no further action is required.

Surrender Certificate required even when we have OCI and passports cancelled

          Hi,

I am having same issue with Travisa in NY when applying for another consular service.

We already have OCI and our passports have "Cancelled" stamp and they are saying that the stamp should be "Cancelled because of acquisition of foreign citizenship" . We have played by the rules and never used the passports after acquiring foreign citizenship.

When I try to use the Travisa site to apply for this besides the 20 USD I am thrown a penaly of 250 USD because our passports had a Expiry date later than 2005 ! Their site says there is penalty for passports which had expiry later than 2005. Now interesting is that there is no option to select already "cancelled" passports.

Chicago consulate has clearly stated its not required but New York is different Jurisdiction !

Please note that if you have acquired US (foreign) Citizenship on or before 31 May 2010 and if you have "Cancelled" stamp on your Indian passport, then there is a no requirement of acquiring "Surrender Certificate". If you do not have a cancelled stamp on Indian passport then you need to get the "Surrender Certificate".

. Those who currently hold an Overseas Citizen of India card or a Person of Indian Origin card are not required to undertake these procedures.

Good Luck and Jai Ho !
