Kids passport expiring in Jan 2012 (less than 6 months)

My daughter's passport is expiring in Jan 2012 (less than 6 months time).

Is it ok to travel to India in Oct 2011 and come back in Jan 2012 ?

I read somewhere that the passport should have atleast 6 months of time before travelling..

It is okay to leave the US in Oct but for returning in Jan you should get it renewed.
