urgent need help!

hi my mother in law is permenant residence of usa. her passport is lost and we tried to get a new passport at indian embassy in ny but they said they cannot fiind her file and so delaying to issue new passport! now she needs to go to india urgently but due to the passport problem she cannot go..is there any way to get a temporary passport or anything which can be useful for her to go to india?? we went to indian embassy in ny several times , they said they sent police inquiry in india where she used to live before so we have to wait..god knows how long we have to wait...can anyone pls suggest something on this???

No one else can help you, but the Indian consulate itself. Try explaining the situation and get a passport under the tatkal scheme. It issues emergency passports. But who knows how long will that take as you'd be dealing with the Indian govt.
