  • Need come help in complicated name issue

    Hi all,

My Full name is "Sendil Kumar Hari Prasad" in which "Sendil Kumar" is my father's name and "Hari Prasad" is my name. I was born in 1978 in Tamil Nadu.

It all started when in in 1982 when my dad applied for my first passport, as per the traditions prevailing at that time, my name was written in the passport as "S Hari Prasad" as during that time its customary for dad initial 's to added to begining of my name.

However, when we applied for my second passport after the expiry of the first one, it was clearly instructed in the passport application that any initial's has to be expanded, so since "S" stands for "Sendil Kumar" Since then, my name in the passport became "Sendil Kumar Hari Prasad".

When i got for my third passport, Suranme in the Passport was left blank and Given name was written as "Sendil Kumar Hari Prasad" When i first applied for my b1/b2 US visa, the visa officer told me that its a must that u should have surname and hence when he approved my US visa, stated at he is going to place "Prasad" as surname and Given name as "Sendil Kumar Hari". I didnt make any issue abt it then, to be frank i was happy i was a offered a visa when the rejection rate were high in chennai embassy.

Based on the initial US visa application, my subsequent paper got filed in the same away such that my H1B, SSN, bank accounts, IRS applications, my medical license, my labor certifications, EAD and finally Green card are all same such that last name is written as "Prasad" and First name as "Sendil Kumar Hari".

Now i hear that while my applying for my fourth passport, its a recent practice while issuing the passport both in India and also Indian embassy around the world that irrespective of how names were written in the previous passports, they have started filling the surname.

So now if they do that in my case, Surname will be listed as "Sendil Kumar" and Given name as "Hari Prasad" which totally contradicts with the current paper work i have in US , mainly in the Green Card.

So my question is that how can i solve this issue. Can i request the Indian emabssy to leave the Surname blank as in my current passport.

I am very confused as what i should go ahead and do to get the things straight.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

    Hari

What is the problem with your name being as per your visa? If that is not acceptable to you, you should decide what you really want as first name and what as last name and do whatever is necessary to achieve that.

Keeping surname (last name) blank will continue to cause you issues everywhere, at least in the U.S.

By the way, most South Indian people in your situation will put their first name as the first name and their father's first name as their last name. (Or husband's first name as their last name, in case of married woman.)
