Splitting name and passport renewal.

Hi All,
My Indian passport expires in July 2011 and I need to renew it. Now the problem is my current passport has my full name listed in the given name column and the surname column is left blank. When I apply for my new passport I would like to get this correct. How do I go about doing this? Do I just apply to get my passport renewed and put the correct split version of my name in the application? Or do I need to apply to get my name changed first in the old passport before I apply for a passport renewal.
