I am taking care of my mother since my father passed away and will be starting a new job soon. I am wondering how I would go about getting my mom medical coverage as a dependent. Is this possible? I've been told NO by certain company HR departments. Is there any way around this?

You can't include your mother as a dependent in your health insurance. There is no way around that.
In USA, your dependents are your legally married spouse and your children under the age of 18. There are some relaxations up to age 23, depending upon the state, if the children are full time students.
But there is no way parents can be considered your dependents for insurance purposes. Thanks & Regards

When you are on your won, choosing an individual or family health
When you are on your won, choosing an individual or family health insurance plan takes on a whole new level of importance. Whether you are self-employed, between jobs, or have taken early retirement or simply do not have access to employer-sponsored health insurance for any other reason, the importance of securing reliable protection from high health care expenses cannot be overstated.
