My elderly parents recently got their green card and came to the US on Mar 15,2023. They got insurance from Apr 1, 2023, under ACA with special enrollment as they had entered the country for the first time with a green card. They intend to go back to India in Jul 2023. I am planning to apply for their re-entry permit so that they can stay outside USA for extended period (less than 2 years). I would cancel their ACA insurance when they leave the USA.
My question is that when they enter the US again, which maybe in the middle of the year 2024 (outside the open enrollment window for ACA) will they be eligible for Special enrollment for ACA and be able to get health insurance when they enter? Or will they have to wait for the next open enrollment window (end of the year to start insurance on Jan 1 of the next year)?
