Travel Health Insurance

Hello. Does anyone have any experience with a time frame for using travel health insurance that is included for a short stay until I leave to the USA on a work/student VISA. As in, should I not opt for the travel insurance that includes medical emergencies while I visit universities or just get health insurance through a VISA when I find a college after my trip to visit the few schools before I make a full decision. I just don't want travel insurance to interfere before getting insurance when I start school in the states.
