Travel Insurance for Exchange Visitor

I'm an Exchange Visitor, joining a US University this September for a one year program. I read your comments at www.insubuy.com/experience/view.html with great interest. It would be nice if you could tell me which company (and which plan) is the best for Exchange Visitor Medical Insurance [medical benefits ($50,000 per accident or illness), a deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness, expenses associated with the medical evacuation to the home country ($10,000), and repatriation of remains ($7,500)].

From your comments, I gather that it would be better to take coverage from a US insurer. But, some guys here in India are telling me to take coverage from an Indian insurer, as it would cover the journey till US also. Is there any merit on this argument?

It is definitely better to buy from US company. The problem is that if you buy from India, most doctors or hospitals would not be willing to bill the insurance company directly and you may have to first pay yourself. Also, you will not get 1 year insurance from India as India allows only max. 6 months.
