  • Drivers License

Just came across your site and really like the info. Wanted to let you know that it is no longer easy to obtain an US drivers license. I am touring through the country and thought I wold buy a car and of course insure it. But the insurance companies wont help with insurance unless I have a US license and I cant get a US license without an employment, citizen, immigant visa of sorts. My perfectly legal Tourist VIsa is of no good. If anyone knows of where to get cheap car insurance that wont cost more than my $1500 car it would be appreciated.

ps..... I wasnt sure where to post this thread so I hope this was ok ...

You don't need to be employed and need not be a citizen of the country to acquire a driver's license but at least you have an immigrant visa. Try progressive car insurance.

      You have the following options:
      1) Try getting an international license which is valid in the US..since ur here I guess its tough to get one from india.see if you can send paper work to india and ask someone to get it done. You will need your original license and have to sign certain papers.
      2) You can show your current-indian-driving license at "Indian Embassy" and they will issue a letter saying "Ok this is authentic".
and then take that with necessary documentation (Check the DMV of the state you are in ) , They will issue you a US drivers license without any test. Note that this is the case if you live in washington DC, rules vary with each state.but this is worth a try.
      3) If the state you are residing in doesnt accept this "indian embassy" thing, then you have to start from scratch just like any other US citizen for the license.
I would first find out from the DMV of the state you are in and find out the process and ask them whether you can get a letter from indian embassy and lalla and if they say NO ...then go ahead and ask somebody you know to get papers for intl drivers license. the validity of intl license is valid till your visa expires. so if you hav a tourist visa for 6 months ,...then it should be good for 6 months. I had a intl license valid for 1 year i guess.so just check on these.
Note that this is not a legal advice. Consult your immigration attorney for the best upto-date information.
