USD transfer to friends NRE account

Hello,
I need to transfer less than 10K USD to my friends NRE (HDFC) account from my US Bank Account(USD). Is this possible and legal?
My friend wanted it in his NRE so that he dont need to go thro tax scanner...

What are the other options I have if i wanted to deposit in friends NRE account?

P.S. I don't yet have a NRE/NRO account.

Yes, it can be done.

You can give him a check, or you can do wire transfer.

Or you can one of the online transfer facilities.
