  • Guide for attesting Power Of Attorney and passport at Washington DC Indian Embassy

    Hello all,

I'm writing this guide/personal experience for all who are attempting to attest Power Of Attorney (POA), Affidavit or Passport from the Indian Embassy at Washington DC. Please use this at your own risk, I'm not an expert, I'm only writing from my experience.

First of all visit the Indian Embassy at DC website and check the instructions under Misc services. Make sure you follow all the steps

    Docs:
Misc services form. One form for all the services required. Make sure you put your photo on page 1 and sign section III on page 3 IF you're an indian citizen
Passport Copy: Front and Back. However, take copy of ALL pages with you (the website mentions first 5 and last 2 pages are required)
    Visa/GC Copy:
Proof of address: Copy of license or state id or any other proof of address mentioned in the website. Documents like bank statement, salary statement, etc. need to be notarized, pl confirm beforehand
    POA:
    a) Make sure the POA has been witnessed by two persons, with their name, signature, date AND address. Your spouse is okay as a witness. If you can't find any
witness beforehand, other people applying at the embassy can act as your witness, just ask
    b) Make sure that you attach your photo at the last page
    c) Get it notarized
    d) Make a copy of the entire POA (AFTER attaching the photo). This will be kept by the embassy for their purposes. There is a photocopier at the embassy, however,
it was out of paper when I went there. So please make a copy beforehand!
    e) You can sign your POA before submitting i.e. you don't need to sign in front of the person at the counter.
Passport or Affidavit attestation: Have a photocopy available.
Originals of all documents (GC, License, Passport etc)

    Getting to the embassy:
REACH EARLY! If you reach early, you'll get in line early and be done early. In my case, I was done by 12:30pm, while people who came in late were still waiting to submit their documents.
COME PREPARED: Bring extra copies of everything, blank unsigned POA, soft copy of POA in email/thumb drive, extra photographs, stapler, glue etc.
Bring 1$, 5$ and 10$ bills with you, so you can pay the exact amount.
My suggestion would be to park at a Metro station and take the metro to Dupont circle. However, if you come early enough, you might find parking around. If you're taking the metro, you will most likely end up taking the Red Line towards Shady Grove and Dupont Circle is the third stop. From Dupont Circle, Indian Embassy is about 15mins walking, you're better off taking a taxi. The embassy has some high tree in front, so it is easy to miss the Indian Flag, look for it carefully.

When entering the embassy, it clearly states to goto basement for Misc services. Go there and upon entering, take a token number. You can take token number even if the counters have not opened i.e. before 10:00am. The representative will call you based on the token number, take your documents and original passport and ask you to wait. After the docs are done, they'll call your name and give them to you.

I might not check this thread again, so please reply to this message AND PM me if you have any questions.
