Cell phone as gift

Hi,

I currenly reside in the U.S. an am planning to mail a friend of mine in India a Cell Phone as a gift. Do I have to pay any kind of taxes on electronics sent as gift to India. Is there any appropriate way other than mailing this phone. I'd appreciate any information.

You can't mail goods like that.

He/she will have to pay customs duty on that which may be more than the cost of the cell phone itself.

GSM cell only and that too has to be network unlocked

even if you somehow manage to send a cell to someone in india, you need a gsm phone only, quad band and has to be network unlocked

the power adapter/charger should be for 110v to 240v and not just 110v.

make sure of these things before you send the phone

Looking at all the headaches, cost and inconvenience, it is not worthwhile to take any cell phone while going to India or send one to someone in India.

It is best to buy a cell phone in India itself.
