Legally you can use your International Driving Permit in conjunction with your Indian driving license to drive in the United States, temporarily.
Not all local law enforcement personnel make it easy for you if you're either involved in an accident or stopped for a moving violation. Also, it will be difficult to get a rental without an US license and a major credit card.
Do check the local laws for your state.
You cannot use only your Indian driving license though.
I once got ticketed for overspeeding and at that time, I produced an India Driver's License. I had to show my passport but I was not ticketed for driving without a valid license. I was given a citation for speeding. But hey, it might vary from state to state. I was talking about Florida.
