Wrongly Spelled (1 letter) Surname in my passport

Any one has faced wrongly spelled (1 letter) SURNAME in the passport .
Did anyone corrected it in USA .

I am planning to go to India from USA for H1B stamping in CHENNAI before that I heard that my surname should be corrected in my passport .


In US the Indian Embassy procedure is to advertise "change of name" in
two newspapers in India and US and submit the orginal clippings.

Did anyone has done
Please let me know the procedure ?

Is there any way to ignore it or to change it ?

Is it a mistake in the name or a name change? The paper ads etc don't apply for error correction if you have other documents to prove that it is an error like marks sheets etc.

I can prove basing on my matriculation , degree and pg provisional certificates. The passport authorties have done the mistake while issuing the passport in 1997 yr I never thought
of changing it but now my lawyer is requesting me to change it .

You mean basing my educational certificates it can be done ?
instead of giving advertisement in local papers ?

Please let me know the path.

Check the indian consulate website in your region. They just issue a correction as an observation stamp on the PP. It is NOT a name change.

I am trying to reach the consulate to find out .

Did anyone got correction in the passport by filling the miscellaneous services form and submitted the Matriculation , Degree and PG Provisional certificate .

Today my passports have come after submitting my documents.
The passport authorities did not correct my surname.

I don't know how to proceed further
