Divorce on a green card

Hi,

Me and my wife have green cards from 5 years and exactly now are going to apply for citizenship. But we also want to divorce. We have not married in US but are legally married in another country.
She did many bad things and I want to separate/divorce quckly.

Can we divorce in US?
Which would be better, before or after becoming citizens?

... divorce is never good, whether it's before or after anything.

In your case, it doesn't matter in anyway. If you have to split, do it now or anytime you so wish.

This will not impact your citizenship application. However, make sure your documentation reflects correct information.

Thanks for your fast reply.

We already splited but I really want to legally divorce - to have everything legal and on a document so she can not drag me into big throubles.

My question was can we leaglly divorce in US, without having married in US?
And if we can do that, what about our country? We have to do another divorce there, I guess? Will the divorce in US help or hurt to the divorce in our country, or it would not matter?

Yes ...

... you can and should file for divorce in United States, if you plan to live here.

If your home country falls in the list which has a treaty with the US, then your divorce here will be honored there too.

Do note there are some countries which do not accept US proceedings.

However, that should not impact you much if you continue to live here.
