Change of name procedure

Hi

Has anyone here got a 'change of name' done successfully in the UK? I have gone through the procedure and have a couple of questions:

1. What constitutes a "valid newspaper" - for example can I publish an advert in one of the 'evening news' papers in my city? I am a student and would like to keep the spend to the minimum.
2. What size should the advert be?

Anyone knows how long the process takes?
