Volunteering while waiting for Work Permit?

I came to the US on a fiancee visa, we got married and just recently I sent out all the papers for the Adjustment of Status and the Employment Authorization Document.

I was wondering if I'm allowed to volunteer while I'm waiting for my work permit? I got out a social security card that says I'm not yet allowed to work. I will contact the volunteering organization anyway and I'm hoping they know what to do, I just wanted to check in here first and see if anyone has an answer to this.

You can do volunteer work as long as it is really a volunteer work.

You can't start working for an employer who will hold your pay until you get your EAD and then back pay you.
