Incorrect I-94 record in the system

Hi,

I landed in US this month on H1B visa.
Last week I went to SSA office to apply for the SSN. They told me that my date of birth in the DHS records in the system is not correct and that they will not process my SSN until I get it correct. They asked me to goto the local USCIS office. I did go to the USCIS office and they told me to go to the UCB office as my "I-94 record in the system" has incorrect DOB.
All my documents viz Passport, Visa, petition and I-94 have correct date of birth.

can someone please let me know as to exactly which office I need to go to redress this? Which office has the authority to correct the I-94 data in the system?

even the same kind of situation with me.I recently came to USA on H1 visa. I am very much new to states. I came to usa on dec 10, 2006. I went to SSN office to apply for an SSN. The SSN officer asked me to wait for 10 days to display my details on-line. Then i went after 10 days to apply for ssn. My details were there, but detailes were displaying wrong with my first name and last name. The SSN officer told me to wait untill its verified. The SSN officer said that it will go for verification and it may take weeks time. I do not know how it happends. My visa, passport, certificates and all are correct. I do not know how come its showing wrong details. Could you please suggest me in few things...?

1. will it become a big issue?
2. How long it may take to get my ssn?
3. Can i work with out SSN?
4. Do i have any other options for me to work with out SSN?
5. on what basis my details are shoing wrong?
