Travel within US without passport

I have applied for Police certificate in Indian embassy at Washington DC.
I have sent my original passport to them and now do not have my passport with me.
I am planning to travel to California this week and I reside in North Carolina.
Can I travel within US without passport?
If I dont have the passport and its with the Indian embassy in US, can I take alternate paperwork to show as proof if airport authorities want to verify my passport? I dont have any other paper to show them as proof.

Check with the Airport; they will help you with this question! From what I know, everyone who has to travel by air domestically has to present either an ID ( US) or a passport before boarding! Good luck.

You can use your DL or state ID for most ID purposes. You will not be asked for passport at most places. It is advisable to carry a copy though.
