Passport About to Expire and ECNR status

My passport is going to expire in some time and i am applying for new passport, in passport application form, there is a column called..

Present Emigration status: ECR/ ECNR : document evidence required.

Currently my passport status is ECR. i would like to go for ECNR.

Do i need to select ECR since my passport current status is ECR , if i want ECNR stamp on my new passport. how can i choose the option, please help,,its urgent.
