Curiosity's sake!

There are certain questions that always clamor in my head whenever an international travel is on the offing. Apart from making 3-4 separate lists on 'things to do' and 'stuffs to pack', especially when you have a little one on board, I have often found myself wondering imaginary situations, which may occur while traveling. I couldn't find and appropriate thread to ask these so here only I am asking, pardon my trespassing. What are the items you generally can pack to keep your little one distracted, apart from games like r say some movies that you can play on yout iPad or food items, if you are allowed to carry some (though maximum time I had to let go of those)! I was once also stranded with my toddler in an airport for missing a connecting flight while my hubby was waiting for us in Bangkok, and didn't receive good treatment from the ground staffs! Is there any specific facilities available for mommies with kids in this type of situation?
