Companies Cuddle or Curse

I wish I could just know, as a person interested in getting a Green Card if I decide to come to the US for a MS course, that the company you manage to place into from an above avergae university, has just what sort of character.
Is exploitation rife...is it the immigrants (ICs mainly) working extra hours
getting paid less
and most importantly can they fight back and defend themselves in cases of jealous attacks and malicious attitudes, or is it that they live like dogs so that the company applies for their Green Card?
what exactly does the COMPANY DO APART FROM PROVIDING EMPLOYMENT.
CAN WE FIGHT BACK, without getting penalised/categorised by US law as a
reactionary/ stubborn subject, fit to deport.
Its really very important for me...I wouldnt come if we cant even fight back. Basic rights are a must...

Some companies (mostly desi-run firms) specialize in applying for green cards while the employee works as a consultant. STAY AWAY FROM THESE! These are the ones you hear horror stories about. Most big employers in US are bona fide, and they treat alien workers exactly the same way as US residents. Work conditions at such places are great, and you feel satisfied at the end of the day.

Basically, stay away from consultancies.
