Help, i am clueless!!!

Hi i have recently applied for a position in the United States to which i may have an excellent chance of getting but have a problem. I am a Canadian citizen but around 20 years ago had a DWI conviction and have heard many different thoughts of what exactly that mean, I am very excited about the oppurtunity to work in the United States but have been told my chances are very slim due to this conviction. Does anybody know what this really means or what i have to do to make this right. thanks
