is applying for a gc risky right now ?

hi guys
could use your advice

have a job offer and company was ready to sponsor green card after 6 months but they are wavering now - one of the reasons is that they caim it is risky to apply for green card right now - is that true ? does it differ in rir and std ?
am considering dropping out of my phd program to work - have a bachelor's degree but no masters' degree - would take me one year to get masters and two and a half to get phd

any advice ?
