When to apply PERM

Hi
I came to US on 29th Jan 2007.
My H1 expiry date is 13th May 2013. ( I gained few months on the top of 6 months because I was out of US for few months)
I have been told that I have to apply PERM 1 year before 6 years H1 completion period
So should I apply PERM by 29th Jan 2012 or 13th May 2012?

i would suggest the earlier the better, as it takes time for the labor to get certified and if the labor goes for audit it might take longer. After that, I140 has to be applied. If the i140 is approved before your H1B expiration(6 yrs limit), it is easier to get an extension.
