Schengen visa application sent for further assessment

My wife and kids intend to travel to Belgium on a 10 day vacation, I am currently in europe - italy and I plan to join them over there. Their visa application was sent for further assessment after an interview. The belgium consulate in mumbai was very efficient in dealing with the application - Day 1 they called up my spouse and after some questions invited her for an interview in mumbai. After the interview the application has been moved to a different status "further assessment". What does this further assessment typically entail?

My family applications are still held up with the belgium embassy, it has been 6 weeks since the application. Can someone share their experiences or insights?

Could you please update if you received your passport.
My status shows 'Your visa application has been sent for further assessment by the Consulate General of Belgium ,MUMBAI.It may take between 10-12 days for a response. You are requested to continue checking for the status of you application on a daily basis.'

I applied for a Belgium visa on 9-May 2014 at the VFS counter in Mumbai. I was called for a personal interview on 23-May and since 26-May, the status on vfs link says ' Your visa application has been sent for further assessment by the Embassy/Consulate of Belgium to the Competent Ministry of Belgium. ".
I wrote an email to concerned ministry in Belgium to know how long it takes to process the visa but after 3 attempts got a response that legally they have upto 60 days to process the application. The same response was received by my Belgian colleague when he tried calling up the local number.
60 days is way too long and defeats the purpose of applying for a business visa. Can anybody let us know approximately how long it takes to get a response? I saw one response saying it takes 10-12 working days but did this come from the embassy and was it personal experience?
Is there anybody who can let us know how long it really took?

Same thing has happened with me. It's been a month and the status still shows " further assesment" I'm suppose to fly out on 14th of July. Can some tell me how long do they usually take when they send the visa for further assessment ?

Can't do any thing will have to wait for a reply. You can apply to a different embassy after withdrawing the application. But that won't make a difference. It's better to wait. They should give an answer before travel dates. I am also still waiting for a reply.

Apparently the belgian embassy has been sending a lot of applications for further assessments to their foreign ministry in belgium. It could be because the applicant is a first time travel to the Schengen area or because the documents submitted need scrutiny. Legally they have a time limit of 60 days to decide on an application. Mine has been stuck for 50 days and my flight date is 14th of July. There is no point calling their belgium office, they just ask you to wait and even the embassy gives the same reply. All you can do is wait and be ready to be called for an interview. I'll keep this thread updated in my situation. Hopefully everyone else would to. it is not guarantee that they will answer before the travel date. My travel date was 3rd of July which already passed and still waiting for their response.
