Urgent Help on Schengen visa - Please

Hello,
I am an Indian working in USA on L1 visa. I am planning to apply for Masters in Germany but I am confused on making a decision. So I thought I can directly go and visit the University first and then make a decision. Is this reason good enough to get a German tourist visa at German consulate in USA?.

Also, If someone is already holding a tourist visa, then it is possible to apply for other visa's like Student or work permit visa?

Could you please help me on this.

Yeah that reason is fine. Your visa will only be valid for your trip so you'll be eligible for a long term visa if you are admitted to uni.
