Schengen Visa While Transit?

Howdy,

I have a general question on Schengen visa. I am an Indian citizen residing in the USA on work visa. I am going to India on vacation for 3 weeks and planning to visit France in between for around 6 days. So I am planning to book the flight ticket which is from Houston-> Paris -> Mumbai and return is Mumbai -> Paris -> Houston.

My question is: I will visit Paris for 6 days while going to India. When I apply from Schengen visa then I will get the visa for 6 days (They give visa for number of days you stay for tourist). After that I will be in India. So while coming back to the USA, I will have my return flight from Paris. So do I have to apply for transit visa as well or is there any chance I can get the Schengen visa for the entire vacation so that I can come back from Paris?

I appreciate if someone can help me with this.

You don't need a transit visa as long as you don't spend more than 24 hours in Paris and don't venture out of the transit area.
