Schengen visa with a H1B extension???

Hi,
Is it possible to get a schengen visa with just the H1B extension? Our visa stamp in the passport has expired. We are planning to go to India and get it stamped...but want to apply for the schengen visa at the Italian consulate in Detroit before we leave to India. That way we can visit Italy on our way back. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Thanks.
