  • Airport transit visa for Germany

    Hi

Me and my family members will be travelling from Chicago to India through Frankfurt (Air India) on May 17th. Our US visas (J-1 and J-2) will expire on May 15th. Do we need to get airport transit visas for Germany? We will not be changing planes or disembarking. We are Indian citizens returning to India for good after completing our legal stay in the U.S
    Appreciate any help

    Transit visa for Germany

We ultimately got transit visas for Germany for the flight thru Frankfurt airport. Air India informed us that unless you have a valid U.S visa or I-94 card you need a german transit visa for a flight through Frankfurt even if you won't disembark from the aircraft. The visa applications can be sent with the necessary documents (incl passports) to the German consulate by mail. The fee is $91. Children under the age of 6 are exempt from the fees.

      Quick imp info

how many days did it take for you to get the transit visa from the consulate. I guess you have applied by mail.

If i go directly to the consulate will the transit visa be issued on the same day? I am asking this since my wife is travelling through frankfurt to India one way. She doesnt have a valid US visa since the extension has not yet approved and she is leaving for an emergency.

She is leaving on Tuesday evening flight from Atlanta and I have only one day (monday) to get the transit visa.

      Thanks in advance.

I received the passports stamped with the German transit visas on the 4th day after applying (by mail). It was very prompt. Don't know whether they will give it on the same day if you go in person. In my case I think they processed it on the day after it was received at the consulate. This reply may be too late for you.

Our US visas had not expired when we applied for German transit visa but expired a couple of days before our departure from US. Anyway I dont think u need to have a unexpired US visa to apply for german transit visa
