  • international student needing schegen visa

Hello! I am in a rather sticky situation--
I am an Indian citizen studying abroad in France next semester for four months. I have been issued a visa for France (** transit Schengen). I know that to be able to travel anywhere in the EU other than France I will need a separate tourist Schengen visa, which I am trying to get before I go abroad. I am a student and would just like to take short weekend trips to various countries when I am not busy.
Here are my problems--I can't plan when/where I will be going until I start the semester, it all depends on my classes. Even if I do apply to say, the Italian embassy with an unfinalized itinerary, will they be willing to give me the Schengen visa for the full 90 days so I can go elsewhere, even though I only plan to visit Italy for maybe 4-5 days and don't have set plans for the others?

Also, all my friends are studying abroad all over Europe this semester--my housing arrangements would be staying in their dorm rooms. Will a letter from them saying I will stay over + an acceptance letter from the European university where they are studying be enough as proof of housing?

Yikes. I was hoping it would be easier to get the tourist visa...the embassies must know that students who go to Europe will hardly stay put in one country!
    Thank you so much,
    Aditi
