Short stay visa for extended petition

Hi,

I'm on L1 and my wife is on L2 and we are living in the US. Our US Visa expired last year (Dec 2007) but our petition for extension has been approved and we have a new I-94 that has a date in Dec 2009.

We're planning to take a vacation to India in October 2008 and will come back in a month with a valid US Visa. We are planning to fly through Air France. On our return from India to US, we want to take a stop-over at Paris for 2 days.

The questions I have -
1. Can I apply for a short stay Schengen visa at a consulate in the US using the approved extension of stay petition and the new I-94 ? I would like to get the visa before I leave for India as I need to book tickets accordingly.

2. Is a short stay Schengen visa sufficient for both airport transit during my onward journey to India and also for the 2 day stop-over on my return?

Spoke to consulate

Spoke to French Consulate. THeanswer is No. They dont accept approved petition of extension or extended I-94. This is accepted only for airport transit visa (Indian passport holders transitting thru Paris on ailines other than Air India) and not short stay visa. Hope this helps someone who is looking to visit France.
