Short visit Schengen visa expire H1b+3 yr approval

Hello,

We are planning to do a 2 day stopover in Paris while going to India for H1b stamping. My wife is on F1 with a valid I20. Both have valid 797 and I-94 but the visa's have expired.

The french consulate website states that the stamped visa needs to be valid. Will appreciate if someone can share their experience?
