Do I have to enter the country that issued my Schengen visa?

I'm planning to travel to Europe from San Francisco. I got my Schengen visa from German consulate. Do I have to fly directly to Germany first and then go to other countries? Can I fly from San Fran to another country other than Germany?
I got type C tourism visa and I'm a US green card holder.
