Transit Visa for UK

Hi,

I need some information regarding the Transit Visa for my fiancée. She is in Ohio, US and planning to go to India Via UK in August. Can you please guide me which visa will be the best for her, either a Transit Visa or a Visitor Visa. She is planning to stay in UK for about 48 hours. How would both the visa’s affect her travel itinerary, would she have to buy two single tickets say one from OH to LHR(London Heathrow) and the LHR(London Heathrow) to DEL(New Delhi) or one ticket with the break journey included in that. For how long is the transit visa valid for, as I read somewhere it is for 48 hours and can the passenger go out of the airport or they have to stay inside only.
