playing soccer and obtaining work permit

Hi,
I want to play soccer in Germany this coming season and planning on traveling there this winter/spring to tryout. I have a U.S. passport and I am assuming the best way to apply for a permit is to get sponsored by my team, have them help me with the process and go from there? Any suggestions or tips for my situation? Thanks
