Birth Place mismatch in passport

I have one letter mismatch in birth place on passport. I need to get it corrected.

Currently my visa is expired but i have i-94 valid till next year. i have few questions before correction

1) if i apply for correction will it affect my status in US ?

My father in law was born in the then east pakistan (born in Bangladesh in 1957 then it was called east Pakistan and got the name Bangladesh in 1971). HI place of birth in passport is also mentioned as Chittagong Bangladesh. He is now Indian citizen and also holds Indian passport...
