Working on independent contracts on L1 visa

Hi everyone. Can a person (owner) on L1 visa of company X work as independent contractor to company Y?

I am an Indian, was in US in 2008 to 2012. I worked for a company in L2 with EAD. Later moved to India but the employer asked me to station in India and manage their operations in Asia and branch office in China. So was traveling between India/China/Indonesia for a year and was paid as Independent consultant....
