While searching for visitor medical insurance, I researched a lot. Asked many people. Called many places. Finally, I bought the health insurance from one Indian company as they claimed they would cover pre-existing conditions in an emergency situations.
And unfortunately, my father got sick and he had to use the insurance. It has been several months and they have not paid a single penny yet. Collection agencies are after me and those guys keep making some or other excuses regarding what really is an emergency situation. "Emeregency situation" is so subjective that it is easier to get away saying that something was not an emergency. Therefore, I believe it is not practically useful at all.
After this incident, I researched more to see whether there are any companies in the US that cover pre-existing conditions for Visitors to US.
And when I found one, I was temporarily glad. However, after going into more details, I found that it practically does not cover any pre-existing conditions as well.
Here is how: It claims that it will cover pre-existing conditions up to 10% in emergency situations. However, it is a limited coverage plan to begin with and it does not pay completely even for new medical conditions. For example, if you need surgery and it costs $40,000, they only pay $3000 (if you bought $50,000 coverage) and you pay the rest, even for new medical conditions. Now, if it pays 10% of that for pre-existing conditions, it is only $300. And I still have to pay $39,700 myself. If I have to pay that much money myself, hospital will give me much bigger discount than $300 that the insurance company claims to pay. What benefit that coverage realistically provides for pre-existing conditions?
In short, I have come to the final conclusion that there is indeed no insurance plan from any company anywhere that really covers pre-existing conditions to visitors to United States. It is simply not economical for any one to cover that.
Views of others are welcome if any one has any suggestions or if anything is incorrect in my understanding above.
