Unable to file OPT extension on time

Hello,
I am a STEM graduate student working on my OPT. My current OPT is expiring on 6th May which means I have roughly 45 days left to file for OPT extension. I am currently working on my thesis and am unsure when I will be ready for defense. Now, I have started to worry about what will happen if I could not file my OPT extension on time. Will I lose my current job? Or is there any other way like taking leave from work or something so that I can hold on to my current job? Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions.

AFAIK, you need to have completed your degree when you apply for extension. Speak with your school's DSO asap.
