Thumb Impression for minor - Left / Right hand for Male / Female - Really?

I am applying for an entry visa to India for my infant. I finished the application documents and decide to cruise around other websites for document checklist and I stumble into this thing about Thumb Impression for minor - Left / Right hand for Male / Female - Really? I see this only on websites unrelated to the Indian government. Is this an old rule that is not needed anymore? I am applying thru New York embassy.
