wheelchair assistance

My motherinlaw is travelling alone from MSP to BOM and we have asked for wheelchair assistance because she does not know english and can barely talk hindi. Has anyone done this in northwest airlines, is it good, reliable, and is it available in mumbai also when she lands, because she needs assistance talking to customs, immigration. I have heard that they take baggage out of the belt and take it to customs and she has to clear there herself. Other problem is immigration form for India, can she fill it here or has she got to fill it in mumbai.

Wheelchair requests are not honored many times now a days because the airline considers this as abuse of the facility. Wheelchair is supposed to be used for people who can't walk properly and for navigating who don't know English.

I have nothing against this practice. But airline authorities are not happy about it. I have seen this personally in Northwest Airlines and other airlines as well.
