Hello to everyone.
I am looking for some information regarding planning my wife’s delivery in India. Both I and my wife are naturalised British citizens who also have OCI card. We were Indian born citizens who held Indian passport until we acquired British citizenship. We now live and work in the United Kingdom.
My wife is now pregnant and I am planning to send her to her mother’s in India for the delivery, hence I have a few questions which I would like clarified, with your kind help:
1. When the baby is born in India, do we need to get any sort of temporary visa to make the baby’s stay in India legal? I would assume the baby’s status is considered legal until he/she travels outside of India but needs visa if wishes to re-enter?
2. With the Indian local government issued birth certificate, will we be able to apply for the British passport for the baby directly or we should first do the birth registrations at the British embassy? Needless to say, we will need both the UK birth registration certificate as well as British passport but I was wondering if we can do it simultaneously just using the Indian issued birth certificate and other required documents? I am more interested in finding out the time requirements so as to plan things accordingly. Is there any single source of information penned by a person who has gone through this kind of procedure?
3. Once I get hold of the British passport and birth certificate for the baby, how easy is it to apply for the OCI for the baby from within India itself? I have come across information from the MHA/MEA website that it can be done from within India itself. But wanted to know how easy it is. What kind of time frame can we expect?
4. As I cannot be in India during the above procedure all the time I was wondering if it would cause any impediment to the process of getting British passport/OCI etc.? Is my original (British) passport required during this process? I can plan my trips accordingly. Hence I was looking for some information. Could you advise?
5. Do we need to buy medical/travel insurance for my wife for the journey as well as stay in India? She intends to be there at least for a year.
6. What other precautions should we take with regard to health of the baby or mandatory vaccinations etc.?
7. Are there any gotchas to look out for, or avoided in advance?
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. If you can reply to a subset of questions above that will be much appreciated too.
