    Re: Work Permit or HSMP

    Hi there,

The HSMP is now called a "Tier 1" application. This is now based on points, and there is a points calculator on the BOrder and Immigration website. If you get enough points, you can get a Tier 1 visa, and start working straightaway.

If you do not get sufficient points, a work permit might be the solution for you. UK work permits are issued to the employer, not the employee, so they will have to submit a WP1 form to prove that they are a legitimate UK business, and also prove that they could not find a suitable candidate in the UK (generally involves a little bit of advertising the job post). Quite straightforward, and takes a few weeks to get processed.

Tier 2 work permits must be issued by employers who are allowed to sponsor. It is quite tough to find companies like these.
